The SpArc - Coaching & Psychedelic Facilitation for Evolutionary Discovery
Greetings Dear Friends,

The heart of summer continues to unfold in its endless bounty. All around Communitas sanctuary, lush green vegetation peppered with wild flowers, honey bees, butterflies, baby deer and rabbits bask upon our mountainside. Yet within my inner landscape, the power of great transitions continues to teach its lessons.  In this season of life, the heart of my work on the personal frontier and in service has been to embody the ways Equanimity.  The deep acceptance of what lies right in front of my eyes with a clear, wise and courageous view.

So much of our life perspective tends to fall between two powerful delusions:  The desperate grasping for the nostalgia of what was; or the yearning and hope for a future that might be.  Yet in both scenarios, reality is relinquished for the perception that things would be better if something were different. The question is then, how do we come to terms with and embrace how things truly are?  How do we let go of the emotional pendulum swings of craving and aversion, or from restless anxiety to fear of discomfort?
A wonderful Dharma teacher from Hawaii, Kamala Masters, once shared during a talk, “Letting go isn’t about releasing with white knuckles what we’re holding onto. It’s about realizing that what you think you’re holding is already gone.”  The wounds, the traumas, the harm, the pain that we’ve experienced along the way – the narratives and mellowdramas – the “wish I would have, should have, if only I…” keep us suffering in an endless spiral of rumination and regret.  It’s not that these past experience hold no importance. Yet only through holding compassion for oneself embracing them as necessary lessons along the way can we metabolize these fractures.   This is what the medicine teaches. Life experience is nonlinear and healing happens right here. Right now. If impermanence and change are the only constants, then presence is the equalizing factor for wholeness.

Recently, a 70 year old client went through a profound internal journey where they eventually came upon the grief of the loss of their father who passed away when they were six years old. An age far to young to truly understand the pain of that loss.  As they lied down offering deep tears and care for their father, I could feel down to my bones how that act of reverence was every bit as meaningful today it would have been 60 years ago.  Right in this moment, we have the choice to embrace the fullness of life no matter what scars we bare from a path well traveled.  Every feeling and every experience to be held with full respect, full honoring; allowing every emotion to receive an equal seat at the table. All things rise and fall away.  All paths are a journey to the stillness of the present heart. Equanimity is saying YES to life just as it is.
Recently I created a substack called “Welcome the Threshold” exploring the cermonial frontier of psychedelic medicine.  There is a great many voices providing brilliant insight on research and the ceremonial landscape.  Yet there are so few who speak on the artistry of facilitation or the depth of experience from inside the journey itself. That is why I made this podcast.  Here is a sample of my first article and please consider subscribing to my substack! I deeply appreciate your support.

Somewhere in my work with hundreds of people across more than five years of psychedelic ceremonial facilitation, a pattern became impossible to ignore.

People are hungry. Not for more information about psychedelics, though there is definitely a certainly appetite for that. They are hungry for depth. For meaning. They are hungry for a conversation that takes the interior life seriously. They are seeking a path toward genuine healing, without flattening a conversation into a wellness checklist or a clinical protocol.

The mainstream psychedelic conversation has matured in important ways. The research is robust and has stretched in almost every academic institution. The cultural permission and acceptance is growing. The therapeutic frameworks are multiplying. All of this is meaningful and necessary.

And something is still missing from most of what I read…

A small pilot study from the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London indicates that psilocybin – the active ingredient in psychedelic ‘magic mushrooms’ – may have potential as a treatment for anorexia nervosa, when combined with therapy.

Anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder that changes how individuals experience their bodies and typically leads to dangerously low food intake and body weight. Current treatments are limited and often ineffective, so new approaches are urgently needed.

The pilot study, now published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, looked at 21 women who had lived with anorexia nervosa for an average of 11 years and had not found long-term success with any previous treatments. On average, participants were 32 years old and had a BMI of 16.4 kg/m2 (a healthy BMI is ≥ 18.5).All participants received three doses of oral psilocybin within a supportive therapeutic environment. The psilocybin sessions were supported with extensive talk therapy before and after dosing…

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued finalized guidance to help researchers studying the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics navigate the “unique challenges” of such investigations. The agency also announced it will be holding a public hearing on psychedelic therapy issues in September.

“In recent years, interest in the therapeutic potential of psychedelic drugs has been increasing,” the FDA document published on Monday says.

“Drug development programs for psychedelic drugs are subject to the same regulations and same evidentiary standards for approval as other drug development programs,” the agency wrote. “However, designing clinical studies to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of these products presents a number of unique challenges.”

The Inner Compass Path is a six-month mentorship program for people experiencing genuine transition. Not transitions that reside feel cohesive and within a natural flow of change. Rather, transitions that arrive abruptly without invitation, disrupting everything you thought was solid and sure, and demanding something from the depths of you that you don’t know how to genuinely support.

This program is designed for courageous souls who find themselves in a deeply challenging crossroads in their lives.

Military veterans, researchers and mental health advocates gathered at the North Carolina General Assembly on June 16 for a legislative “Day of Action.” Their purpose in Raleigh was to lobby lawmakers in support of a bill aimed at expanding access to psychedelic-assisted therapies.

The coalition is pushing for the passage of Senate Bill 1018, formally known as the North Carolina Healing Through Evidence-Based Access to Lifesaving Care Act, or HEAL Act…

For those interested in the path of insight meditation, this book touches the very soul of the practice.  Written by two of the most inspiring voices in the tradition, Joseph Goldstein & Jack Kornfield, it holds a full tapestry of wisdom teachings and practical guidance.  True to the title itself, it offers a tremendous amount of heart in the way the path is offered cover to cover. It has been instrumental for me.
